UNL Research Project

The team at the Rusty Star is pleased to host a 3-year grazing research project conducted by the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Multiple sites throughout the ranch have been selected as control sites to measure the effects "Mob Grazing" has on plant species diversity, soil carbon capture and animal performance. It has been long believed that "mob grazing" best simulates the grazing habits of the great migratory herds of animals that once inhabited the Great Plains. Large numbers of animals (the mob) on a small area of land for a short grazing period with a long period of plant rest and recovery to follow. We have practiced this style of grazing management for 6 years. We are excited to work with the scientists to measure the results and benefits that we believe are very obvious on the ground.
